Dear Colleague,

SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) and the Society of Military Surgeons are pleased to announce the 6th Annual Military Surgical Symposium that will take place in Baltimore, MD, as part of SAGES 2019 Annual Meeting. The symposium will also serve as the ACS Committee on Trauma Resident Paper Competition for the Army and Air Force.

SAGES 2019 Annual Meeting is April 3-6, 2019 at the Baltimore Convention Center, Baltimore, MD. The Military Surgical Symposium takes place April 3, 2019.

The military symposium will include all three military services and will be part of the scientific and clinical sessions of the SAGES 2019 Annual Meeting. Please note that this is not an official Department of Defense event. Registration for both the SAGES conference and military symposium will be free to personnel currently on active duty.

Call for Abstracts

We also would like to announce our Call for Abstracts for this symposium.

All abstracts will be submitted for podium and poster presentations. There will be three sessions:

  • Basic Science
  • General Surgery
  • Trauma/Critical Care

New this year we will be accepting approved Quality Improvement Projects (QIP). Your abstract can be submitted even if your research or QIP is not yet complete, as long as it will be completed by December 7, 2018. Please note in the abstract submission that your research is still in progress and that you will send the final abstract via email to abstracts@sages.org by December 7, 2018.

Important Notice: The following Abstract Submission Policies will be firmly enforced:

  • No Previously Published Submission: The abstract submitted must present original work, performed by the author and must not have been published prior to April 3, 2019.
  • No Dual Submissions: The abstract must not have been submitted to any other upcoming meeting in North America.
  • The paper may have been previously presented at another meeting but must not have won any previous awards.
  • Digital Poster Submission: If selected for a Poster Presentation, a digital version of the poster must be submitted.
  • The Society of Military Surgeons will be accepting videos this year. The Maximum length for videos is Seven (7) Minutes and no 3D Videos will be accepted. To be considered for a Video Presentation, a short (two to three sentences) video abstract summary of your video MUST be submitted via the online abstract submission site and your video MUST also be uploaded online. The abstract copy is limited to 400-words and must include the following:

  • Objectives
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Conclusion

No reference to the authors or the institution should appear within the body of the abstract or in the abstract title.

SAGES Policy on Employees of Commercial Interests

The ACCME states that an employee/owner of a commercial interest may not serve as a planner or speaker for an accredited CME activity when the topic to be discussed is relevant to the products or services of the company. Therefore, the SAGES Conflict of Interest Committee (CIC) declares that no employees/owners of a commercial interest may present in SAGES CME accredited activities. This policy is applicable to invited faculty, abstract presenters, and poster authors (if posters are approved for CME). Individuals who serve on a commercial interest’s Board and who receive a salary will be considered an employee.

It is the general expectation of ACCME that commercial interest employees/owners may not be involved in the content of accredited education. However, if the products and business lines are in no way related to the content of your abstract, SAGES may consider an individual exception at its discretion. Please contact erin@sages.org to request an exception.

If a faculty/presenter indicates they serve on an Advisory Board of a commercial interest but are not salaried, or if they have equity interest but are not salaried, then they will not be considered an employee but their presentation must be peer reviewed.

If a non-presenting author is an employee, then the presenting author may elect to remove that author or participate in a non-CME activity.

CME

As a Joint CME sponsor, SAGES and the Society of Military Surgeons require that speakers comply with the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support of CME. As our speaker, you are required to disclose any such support. It is the policy of the Office of CME to conduct post-activity evaluations. The results of these evaluations are used to plan future CME activities and are shared with the faculty.
